MADE IN MONTEREY AT THE MONTEREY MUSEUM OF ART
ON VIEW THROUGH OCTOBER 25, 2009
50TH Anniversary Exhibition Celebrating the Painting,
Photography and Contemporary Art of California

[MONTEREY, CA]— Now on view at the Monterey Museum of Art Pacific Street is Made in Monterey, a sweeping exhibition of the most beloved and important works from the permanent collection created by artists in Monterey or by those inspired by the region. The exhibition opened on April 18 at 559 Pacific Street and will be on view through October 25, 2009.

Beginning with the pioneering artists who sojourned on the Central Coast in the late 19th century (including Jules Tavernier and Raymond Dabb Yelland), the exhibition features significant works of Monterey modernists such as Armin Hansen and Margaret Bruton as well as photography visionaries Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. Two renowned works by Armin Hansen, Nino and Men of the Sea, have been conserved and make their stunning debut in this new presentation. For more information call 831.372.5477 or visit www.montereyart.org.

A highlight of Made in Monterey is Painting by Moonlight: The Nocturne. This is an evocative selection of nocturnes—paintings depicting the Monterey Peninsula at nighttime—which are on display in a reflective gallery space. To enhance the experience, Robert Danziger has created a “sound sculpture” to accompany the exhibition. The recording features the expected and the unexpected sounds one might hear if walking through the moonlit early twentieth century Monterey landscape, such as sea lions, birds, wind, waves and hoof beats.

“This is the most ambitious exhibition ever mounted by the Museum,” says Executive Director E. Michael Whittington. “It surveys the iconic images from the Monterey Art Colony from the pioneers to the present day.”

Also created for this exhibition are family gallery activities. Museum visitors can check out Tour-in-a-Tote, which consists of a tote filled with five gallery activities for use in the Museum at no additional charge when they purchase admission. The activities include an art activity to complete in the museum using a complete artist’s tool box, interactive opportunities to discover how paintings are made, tools to see photographs in new and delightful ways, and activities and suggestions for making art at home. Over the course of the exhibition, additional tours will be released for Tour-in-a-Tote, expanding the variety of experiences for return visitors. Additional Discovery Spots family gallery activities will begin Saturday, May 16 and be available daily through the duration of the exhibition.

“We wanted to create a way to engage families during their visit and offer them opportunities to bring their learning home,” says Executive Director, E. Michael Whittington. “Visitors will want to come multiple times to experience all aspects of this incredibly rich exhibition.”

A second 50th Anniversary exhibition 50/fify 50 Gifts for the Next Fifty Years is on view through June 21, 2009 at MMA La Mirada. The exhibition features fifty significant works of art that have been given or are promised to the Museum in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Extraordinary examples early California paintings by John O’Shea, Granville Redmond and Sidney Yard, photographs by Ansel Adams, Yousuf Karsh, Imogen Cunningham and W. Eugene Smith, contemporary art including works by Joan Savo, Kenjilo Nanao, Johnny Apodaca and Barry Masteller, and exquisite examples of contemporary Japanese pottery are highlights of the exhibition. A family gallery guide offers a self-guided tour of the galleries to enhance the experience for younger visitors.
