Louis Siegriest

(Oakland, CA, 1899 - 1989, Oakland, CA)

The son of a pioneering man who had crossed half the continent on foot, Louis Siegriest was one of the youngest members of the Oakland-based Society of Six. According to a 1980 interview, Siegriest asserted that the French Impressionists, whose work the six artists encountered at the Pan Pacific International Exposition in SF in 1915, dramatically influenced their use of bold color and brushwork going forward. Later in life, Siegriest would move into mixed-media abstracts. He often showed with his son, Lundy Siegriest, himself an abstract expressionist. (Please see his Road to Teothuacan in MMA Collection.) Siegriest was predeceased by his son and died, at the age of 90, in the same house in Oakland in which he was born.
