William P. Silva

(Savannah, GA, 1859 - 1948, Carmel, CA)

A Southerner from Savannah, Georgia, William Silva was almost 50 years old when he decided to give up a career as a businessman and become a painter. He went to Paris where he studied at the Académie Julian. It was during his time in France that he was exposed to the work of the Impressionists, particularly Monet, which was to have a strong influence on his work. In 1913 he settled in Carmel, where he built a studio in the dunes off Carmelita Street. Although he lived in Carmel the rest of his life, often painting sets for the Forest Theater productions, he and his wife often travelled back to the South, and to France.
