Elmer Wachtel

(Baltimore, MD, 1864 - 1929, Guadalajara, Mexico)

Starting out in a career as an accomplished violinist, Elmer Wachtel, at age 30, turned his attention to painting. He went to New York City for a year of art study, where he received guidance from William Merritt Chase. In 1903 William Keith introduced him to a young artist named Marion Kavanaugh. It was love at first sight and they spent the following decades travelling and painting together in a specially outfitted sedan. They made their permanent home in the Arroyo Seco area of Pasadena, becoming valued members of the area-€™s growing art colony.
