Born in Prussia, William Wendt immigrated to Chicago at the age of 15, studying briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago. He and his wife, sculptor Julia Bracken, moved to Los Angeles in 1906 and bought the studio/home of Elmer Wachtel (see his Eucalyptus Trees, MMA Collection). In 1912 the Wendts moved to Laguna Beach where he became a central figure in the emerging art colony of the young coastal village, and a founding member of the Laguna Beach Art Association.
