Esther Bruton
(Alameda, CA, 1896 - 1992, Monterey, CA)
American, b. 1896 (N. Cal.; local)
Like her two sisters, Esther Bruton was born and lived in California most of her life. When her older sister, Margaret, went to NYC to study art, Esther followed and took commercial art, landing a job as a commercial illustrator at Lord and Taylor department store. She travelled to Paris with her sisters, returning to California to take up fine art seriously. Esther-s particular focus was her ability to work with wood and paint. She made painted screens and was a skilled muralist. One of her commissions included the circus-theme murals in the cocktail lounge at the Fairmount Hotel in San Francisco.
