Margaret Bruton

(Brooklyn, NY, 1894 - 1983, Monterey, CA)
American, 1894-1983 (N. Cal.; local)
Along with her two sisters Esther and Helen, Margaret Bruton left her native San Francisco to study at the Art Students-€™ League in NYC. All three young Brutons returned to California, and by 1924 had joined the growing number of stylistically dynamic painters on the Monterey Peninsula. Margaret and her sisters would often provide the platters of food for the evening gathering of artists at (what we now call) the Stevenson House. Like so many California artists, Margaret spent time in Paris, studying at the ,i>Academie de la Grande Chaumiere</i>. She was also drawn to the American Southwest where she sketched the old ghost towns, and lived for a while among the Pueblo Indians.
