Elaine Mayes

(1938 - )

Elaine Mayes was based in San Francisco and was put on assignment by Hullabaloo Magazine to cover Monterey Pop. Elaine came to the festival as a professional photographer. In her photos you can see the crisp focus and a strong depth of field: skills that come from experience. She photographed from the press pit mostly. -€œOnce you got a spot there, you needed to stay put, as you would never get back in if you left.-€ Along with stage acts, she also took wonderful photographs of the crowds and attendees, which give a real sense of the feeling and fashions of the time. She describes her experience at Monterey Pop, -€œFor most of us the festival was a spectacular tribal weekend, a pinnacle celebration of a vision for a way of life. But I also sensed that Monterey Pop meant an end to an era.-€ Elaine continued on after Monterey Pop as a photographer. She produced her project -€œAutolandscapes-€ with her National Endowment for Democracy Fellowship, taught photography at the University of Minnesota, was a member of the founding faculty at Hampshire College and retired from New York University as the Chair of the Photography Department in 2001 to focus on her own creative work.
