Paul Dougherty
(Brooklyn, NY, 1877 - 1947, Palm Springs, CA)
American, 1877-1947 (N. Cal.; local)
Although trained as a lawyer, Paul Dougherty (pronounced -dog-er-tee-) became one of America-s most recognized and prize-winning artists of his time, learning his self-taught skills through travel, determination and an innate gift with color and motion. Unlike fellow National Academician Armin Hansen, Dougherty-s seascapes are devoid of human presence, focusing instead on the churning turbulent seas and rocky coastlines. A prolific and versatile painter, he produced hundreds of works capturing his beloved Maine coast, the harbor of St Ives (Cornwall), the coast of Brittany, and the Central Coast of California.
