(San Francisco, CA, 1886 - 1957, Monterey, CA)
Born in San Francisco, Hansen studied under Tonalist painter Arthur Mathews at the Mark Hopkins Institute, followed by roughly four years in Europe working as a deckhand on trawlers in the North Sea. He settled in Monterey in 1913. There he became a pivotal figure in the regional art scene, influencing a number of other Central Coast artists with the modernist approaches he had learned in Europe.
