Joseph Greenbaum
(New York, NY, 1864 - 1940, Los Angeles, CA)
American, 1864-1940 (N. Cal./S. Cal.)
Joseph Greenbaum was known for his paintings of the California coast, its hills, and its deserts, as well as its prominent citizens. Like so many of the young artists coming of age in America, Greenbaum traveled to Paris and Munich, soaking up both instruction and exposure to European trends. He settled in San Francisco but traveled extensively around the state; one remarkable group of images were his drawings and painting of the Chinese fisherfolk in Monterey. Although MMA does not currently own any of these depictions by Greenbaum, many artists recorded similar scenes. (See Armin Hansen-s watercolor titled Monterey, Old Chinatown.)
