William Keith

(Oldmeldrum, Scotland, 1838 - 1911, Alameda, CA)
American, b. Scotland, 1838-1911 (N. Cal.; local)
Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, William Keith travelled to San Francisco at the age of 21 and settled there, establishing an engraving business on Clay Street. A few years later he gave up engraving to devote himself full-time to painting. In 1872 he met naturalist John Muir who took Keith to remote parts of Yosemite, teaching him the names of trees and flowers and interesting him in the natural world of California. Although he travelled to Europe with his artist wife, Elizabeth Emerson, where they both studied painting, the Keiths always returned to the Bay area. During the earthquake and fire of 1906, he lost roughly 2,000 paintings when his studio was destroyed.
