David Ligare
Painting
(Oak Park, IL, 1945 - )
American, b.1945 (N. Cal.; local)

The Central Coast is proud to call internationally known artist, David Ligare, one of our own. Ligare describes himself as a post-modern neoclassical artist. Using narrative and mythology, his figures and landscapes and still-life paintings echo Greco-Roman antiquity both in content and spirit. They are thoughtful, balanced, elegant, and subtle.

Inspired by the Central California light that has drawn so many artists to this region, Ligare&#39s style veers sharply from plein-air impressionism toward what he calls realistically depicted perceptual analysis, exploring the potential meanings of objects. Whether he&#39s painting a floating drapery or a basket of lemons, he imbues his subjects with a dignity, scrutiny and curiosity which invite the viewer to understand the object anew.

Photo © Loran List, 1978.
