Like so many artists in the early years of the 20th century who were experimenting with a variety of techniques, Mary DeNeale Morgan-s style defies pigeonholing. From quiet Tonalist sand dunes to lively Impressionist cypress trees, her work reflects a lifelong curiosity with materials and approaches. Working in everything from oil and watercolor to charcoal, tempera, pastel, and monotype she became an influential presence in the Carmel art scene where she settled permanently in 1909. This was before there were any galleries in town; so she printed up her own -business cards- inviting people to come visit her in her home / studio at the corner of Lincoln and 7th. In 1927 she became a founding member of the Carmel Art Association (still in business today as the oldest continually operating gallery on the Central Coast).
