William F. Ritschel

(Nuremburg, Germany, 1864 - 1949, Carmel, CA)
United States, b. Bavaria
Through the generosity of his family, the Monterey Museum of Art is fortunate to have a significant collection of William Ritschel-€™s work. Born in Germany and employed as a young man as a sailor in the North seas, Ritschel emigrated to America at the age of thirty-one. In 1911 he settled in Carmel where, in 1918, he began construction of his strikingly unique stone house overlooking the Pacific, affectionately known to this day as the Ritschel Castle. It served as both his home and his studio. According to historian Edan Hughes, Ritschel was remembered for years as sitting in a flowering sarong on the rocks outside his home, easel and brushes in hand. Along with Armin Hansen and Paul Dougherty, Ritschel had the distinction of being elected a member of New York-€™s National Academy of artists.
