August Francois Gay

(Rabou, France, 1890 - 1948, Monterey, CA)
American, b. France, 1890-1948 (N. Cal:local)
August Gay was the one member of the Society of Six who moved to Monterey in 1918, settling in the -€œStevenson House-€ (so named because R.L. Stevenson had stayed there in the 1870-€™s) where many artists worked and socialized. Among them were C.S. Price, Lucy Valentine Pierce, the Bruton sisters, Armin Hansen, Evelyn McCormick, as well as visits from other members of the Society of Six, down from Oakland. To the surprise of his friends, August Gay married at age 44. He and his wife, whose exceptional cooking drew and delighted their friends, lived at the Stevenson House until it was bought by the State in 1941.
