California Landscape

n.d.
Work on paper
Watercolor, Ink, Charcoal on paper
7.75 x 10.75 in. (19.685 x 27.305 cm)
A Gift from the Collection of Alva A. Christensen and Helen B. Christensen
Accession Number: 2000.041

This small undated charcoal and watercolor sketch bursts against its edges with dynamic movement. Foliage in the foreground, hills in the distance, an odd elongated structure (barn?) pushing diagonally across the space - all add to the lively feel of the scene. This is one of fourteen O'Shea paintings in the MMA Collection, and although one of the smallest, it has the same saturated warmth and energy as his larger works and an expressive leaning toward modernism.
