Very unlike his usual California landscapes for which Welch became known, this intimate, seemingly informal, family scene is actually a carefully constructed genre painting. The group at the round sharpening stone form a circle themselves. And the figures on the right provides a vertical balance to the composition. The deep shadows, with flecks of sunlight filtering through the trees, add to a sense of sheltered comfort. Although it is challenging to guess when this was painted, it was probably directly inspired by the European genre paintings Welch encountered in his twenties.
