When Ludmilla Pilat and Thaddeus Welch wed, she was 16 and he was 39. By the time this rustic scene was painted they had moved to Santa Barbara, having gained a comfortable livelihood through their painting. Ludmilla was particularly known for her depictions of rural landscapes and romantic adobes. This close-up scene of an adobe farmhouse, shadowed by an enormous Eucalyptus, invites curiosity and nostalgia. The rooster suggests that it is still inhabited, despite its state of disrepair.
