Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Ferdinand Burgdorff studied at the Cleveland School of Art and then in Paris. At the age of 26, travelling by horse, boxcar, and wagon, he headed West to explore and to paint. The vast spaces of the West - the deserts, the mountains, the rugged coastline - provided exotic inspiration to the young Midwesterner. Settling at first in the nascent Carmel art colony, he later built a permanent home on Ronda Road in Pebble Beach. Yet he continued throughout his long life to explore the Western states. This Yosemite Valley scene reflects his delight in finding what he described as a world undisturbed by a single human within miles.
