Although trained in the East and settling in California, John O'Shea travelled to the Southwest, Mexico, Hawaii, and the South Seas. This delightful plate of Tahitian fish, resting on palm fronds and painted on canvas-board, was one of many paintings produced during his travels. One can-t help but think these fish look happy to be on the plate. The loose colorful Impressionist style is a distinct change from his California paintings we-re more familiar with.
