© David Ligare
David Ligare treats all of his subjects with what he refers to as insistent honesty. This image of a piece of drapery, painted shortly after he settled in California as a young artist, shows the same reverence and dignity that he would impart to his subjects throughout his career. The rumpled fabric rests on another piece of fabric - a smooth white tablecloth. The painting invites questions. What is the animated piece of cloth doing there, basking in the sunlight? Why is the ocean in the background? Why is the composition cut in half horizontally? The crisp realism of the cloth invites logic, but the scene teases us with irrational challenge. Perhaps the fabric just is, and that-s enough.
