Gilbert became known for his impressionist landscapes of the California Coast. Here he uses the complementary colors of golds and blues as well as the jagged rim of vegetation along the bluffs to energize this scene. He catches the wave just as it breaks against the rocks; and he gives the scene a sense of immediacy by including the fragment of rock in the lower left which situates the viewer in the scene. The green of the hills suggests that it must be springtime. The coastline looking south from Point Lobos toward Big Sur has provided endless inspiration to artists, then and now.
