Norwegian by birth, Jonnevold joined the many young European artists who made their way to San Francisco in the late 19th century. Known primarily as a California landscape painter, his work often reflects the tonalist style so prevalent at the time. This dreamy pastoral scene, with its jewel-toned sky, brings to mind other intimate creek-side paintings in the collection, for example, those by William Keith and Astley Cooper.
