Although Dougherty and his wife had made Carmel their permanent home in 1931, becoming active in the local art scene, they continued to travel. They regularly spent winters in Arizona as evidenced in this scene in Sabino Canyon scene near Tucson. The hills, trees and creek are treated with the same iridescent colors and impressionist brushwork as his seascapes.
