In the 1930's Maynard Dixon's paintings of the west moved away from Impressionism and toward a maturing modernist style. The distilled and simplified shapes in this small desert-scape give a sense of vastness by contrasting the massive boulders in the foreground, within our reach, with the empty expanse beyond. Even the bits of vegetation share the same dry palette as the sand and the rocks.
