Maynard Dixon, American, (1875–1946)

Indian Chief

Oil on canvas board
24.25 x 20 x 0.75 in. (61.595 x 50.8 x 1.905 cm)
Bequest of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Holman
Accession Number: 1982.042

Although born into an aristocratic family of Virginia Confederates who migrated to California during the great westward push, Dixon was a Westerner through and through. His reputation flourished as one of the finest artists to have devoted his attention to Western culture and wilderness, just as they were slipping away. This portrait, rather than exuding a Hollywood beads-and-feathers exoticism, reflects a white-haired gentleman of stature and dignity.
