Before the sardine industry got going in Monterey, salmon provided the main fishing business. In this painting of salmon trawlers, we see the two long poles extending from the skiff, and the wake made by their lines dragging in the water. In the distance Hansen has painted two more trawlers, as well as a sailboat off on the horizon. One gets a sense of the vastness of the ocean as it almost engulfs the boats. The gold color of the trawler's interior is a dynamic contrast to the surrounding blue.
