This large oil painting is both dazzling and puzzling. The rich colors, particularly the pile of orange fish in the foreground, are echoed in the warmth of the hills in the background. But the composition, the delineated figures, the small fish hanging surreally in the midground, and the broken plains of color are unlike anything Hansen has done in his other -€œmen and the sea-€ paintings. Here the fishermen appear subdued and hunched (in prayer?). Certain details such as the -€œghost-€ image of a boat and the seemingly unclad figure standing next to the mast, give the work an unfinished feel.
