When Lucy Pierce moved south from San Francisco to Monterey, she settled in a house on Mesa Road very near to what is now the La Mirada home of the Monterey Museum of Art. Along with other young artists of the time, she took informal classes with Armin Hansen at his home on Eldorado Street. With its emphasis on simplified geometric shapes and use of rich color, this image shows similarities to the work of Hansen, August Gay, and Margaret Bruton, all friends at the Stevenson House gatherings.
