Gene McComas, along with her husband, artist Francis McComas, travelled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico and the South Seas, although for much of their life they made the Monterey Peninsula their home.

In this oil painting, with its cropped composition suggesting a much larger building than what we see, it is the angles and shapes, defined by shadow and sunlight, which interest the artist. Although there is depth to the picture plane, the ambivalence about what exactly we're looking at gives this a modernist feel. McComas insists our eye settles on the strong brick-colored foreground.
