One can't help but notice the similarities between this work by Maynard Dixon and some of Georgia O'Keeffe's softly molded landscapes of New Mexico. With the emphasis on design, color, and self-expression, Dixon is able to convey the mysterious and paradoxical remote intimacy of this Nevada scene. The weather-worn hills rise up from the ancient dry lakebed, separated by a swath of sparse desert vegetation. Is the tonalist palette a remnant of Dixon-s early lessons with Arthur Mathews?
