Born in Japan, and migrating to CA at age nine, Hayakawa decided to make art her career while still a teenager. But she was sent away from home by a father who didn't approve. After working a number of menial jobs to make ends meet, she chose to devote herself full-time to her oils and print-making. She lived here in Pacific Grove and Monterey from the early through late 1930s. As a Modernist, she was known for her rich use of color and patterned shapes.
