Untitled (Carmel River)

n.d.
Painting
Oil on canvas
19 x 25 in. (48.26 x 63.5 cm)
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Worth
Accession Number: 1981.010

This undated nocturne by Charles Rollo Peters uses his familiar image of an old adobe home in the moonlight, next to a body of water in which the light from a single window is reflected. We know someone is home. But this painting has a bit of mystery to it: it is unclear what is happening on the right of the canvas with its indistinct shapes and dashes of red. And the painting came to MMA with the title parenthetically labelled -€œCarmel River,-€ but it-€™s uncertain what adobe it is, or where it could be along the river. Most of Peters-€™ known nocturne were painted in Monterey.
