Arthur Hill Gilbert, American, (1894–1970)

early 20th c.
oil on canvas
16 x 20 in. (40.64 x 50.8 cm)
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. William W. Blackburn
Accession Number: 1975.041

Notice how the exceptionally low horizon line in this painting adds to its sense of vastness. Born in Illinois, Gilbert was drawn to the flat expanses of the western landscape. He settled in California, becoming a pioneer member of the Carmel Art Association as well as an early member of San Francisco's Bohemian Club. The overriding subject of this painting is the clouds whose warm billowing shapes move across the cool landscape. Our eye travels from those stark upright poles in the foreground to the somewhat dilapidated barn in the middle distance. The tire tracks suggest a narrative.
