The Hatton ranch at the mouth of Carmel Valley inspired many painters. In this expansive landscape, August Gay places the dairy cows in the foreground with geometrically rendered farm buildings catching the sunlight as they stretch across the mid-canvas. It's interesting to compare this image with E. Charlton Fortune's painting of the same scene (also in the MMA Collection).
