Seldon Gile, with whom August Gay shared a cabin in Oakland when they formed the Society of Six, often became impatient with the small, wirey, curly-haired Frenchman who worked slowly, talked slowly, and made little money. Always a Frenchman, having come to CA as a teenager with his parents, Gay had a continental love of food, of wine, of sentiment and conversation. This small self-portrait packs a powerful punch with its forceful yellow background framing the artist's bereted head.
