Squid Fishing Off Pacific Grove

ca.1943
Painting
Oil on canvas
5.5 x 7.5 in. (13.97 x 19.05 cm)
Gift of Barbara and William Hyland
Accession Number: 1991.251

This small luminous seascape of squid-fishing boats off the coast of the Monterey Peninsula depicts a quiet time of day. The soft impressionist style contrasts with the busy activity of the fishing boats pursuing their catch; DeRome manages to express so much with so little. His close friends and sketching partners included Wm Keith, Will Sparks, Percy Gray, and Frank Myers all of whom were also enchanted with California light and scenery (and whose works are in the MMA Collection).
