Built in 1842 at 460 Pierce Street by Francisco Soberanes, the Jesus Soto Casa has had a colorful history. Steinbeck purchased it from artist Josephine Blanch, curator of the Hotel Del Monte art gallery. He lived here with Gwyn, his second wife, and Thom, his first son, in 1944 and 1945 while he wrote The Pearl.
This painting shows McCormick's masterful rendering of dappled light filtering through the trees and onto the white adobe walls.
