According to art historian Wm Gerdts, Fortune was arguably the most avant-garde artist working in Northern California in the early 20th century. Her brushwork was described as vigorous, bold, and -masculine,- (apparently a compliment). The gold, blue and rose palette of this painting, and the flapping sails, give the scene warmth and animation, despite the absence of human figures.
