Esther Bruton, American, (1896–1992)

Untitled (landscape)

Work on paper
Watercolor on paper
16.5 x 19 in. (41.91 x 48.26 cm)
Bequest of Beth and Mellon (Bud) Baird
Accession Number: 2006.016

Although the three Bruton sisters - Esther, Helen and Margaret - all spent time studying art in Paris, New York and San Francisco, the center of their world for much of their very prolific fifty years of creating art was the family home on Cass Street in Monterey. They were regular participants in the social gatherings of artists at the Stevenson House. There diverse styles and influences were passed back and forth over the plates of hearty food and jugs of wine.

This watercolor by Esther Bruton belies categorization. Its imaginative colors and disregard for traditional perspective suggest modernism, Fauvism, regionalism, etc, but it is its own playfully original interpretation of a California landscape, complete with agricultural fields, golden hills, and distant mountains.
