William F. Ritschel, American, (1864–1949)

Mammoth Cove

Oil on canvas
49.5 x 59.5 in. (125.73 x 151.13 cm)
Gift of the Ritschel Trust in support of the William F. Ritschel Memorial
Accession Number: 1976.061

Typical of Ritschel's fascination with the relationship of ocean and granite just below his Castle in the Carmel Highlands, this work is evidence of his mastery of light and shadow. The warm glow of sunshine accentuates the massive solid rocks, while giving life to the swirling waters below. The cropped close-up composition lends the scene a dramatic immediacy.
