William F. Ritschel, American, (1864–1949)

Apres Diner

Oil on canvas
21.75 x 27.75 in. (55.245 x 70.485 cm)
Gift of Patricia Smith Ramsey in memory of Robert J. Ramsey
Accession Number: 1991.300

Stepping away from his usual marine subjects, Ritschel, in this undated still life, is showing the direct influence of the French Impressionists on his work. The sunlit white tablecloth, so typical in the French Impressionist works, as well as the used dishes suggesting a finished meal, would be familiar conventions of the early century.
