E. Charlton Fortune, American, (1885–1969)

Pilchard Boats

ca. 1922-1923
Painting
Oil on canvas
12 x 16 in. (30.48 x 40.64 cm)
Gift of Monsignor Robert E. Brennan
Accession Number: 1985.041

Fortune's depiction of the harbors and boats of St Ives and St Tropez, during her European travels, radiate the vibrancy of these communities. Like Armin Hansen, her colleague in Monterey, she was interested in the daily activities and vitality of the local fishermen. The thickly and quickly applied paint, the fluttering suggestion of gulls, the crowding of the little boats, all add to the lively feel of the scene.
