© Estate of Sam Colburn
Sam Colburn was a pivotal member of Monterey's mid-century art community; besides producing numerous watercolors, he painted public murals, he taught classes, and he wrote art criticism for the Carmel Pine Cone. His style reflected the fluid gestural scene painting emerging in California at the time. His watercolors are an expressive blend of realism and modernism, as seen here in the simplified geometric shapes. There is something playful about this farm scene with its glowing areas of light , its sentry-like water tower, its golden hill tumbling toward the sky.
