This small watercolor on paper shows the influence of Tonalism on young Francis McComas. With its metallic colors, simple composition and quiet mood, it echoes other works in the MMA Collection such as Xavier Martinez' Monterey Landscape and Gottardo Piazzoni's Untitled Landscape. Our eye settles on the sunlit wall of the small coastal house, which, as in so much of Asian art also, only suggests a presence of humanity in the landscape.
