The Museum has two versions of the Castro-Work Adobe (now La Mirada) by Charles Rollo Peters. This, the larger one measuring 32-x55-, is a striking nocturne of the red-tiled roof structure. Using a very limited palette, Peters creates a mood of mysterious quiet with the old building reflected in the water; the glow of light in the window lets us know that someone is present. Although we read the adobe walls as white, there is in fact no pure white paint on the canvas. Peters interprets the white in the moonlight through the use of soft blues and greens and touches pink.
