Painted during one of the European trips early in her career, this harbor scene is an example of the bright Impressionist palette that Fortune adopted while there, and which she brought back with her to California. Although Impressionism had already run its course in Europe by this time, it was welcomed in California as progressive realism. Fortune's loose quick brushwork ignores specific detail to create a lively scene of harbor activity, from the almost- audible swarm of gulls to the busy fishermen hauling in their skiffs.
