In 1924 O'Shea and his wife built their home in Pirate's Cove in the Carmel Highlands where he could watch the restive ocean in all of its different moods. A prolific painter, he painted many seascapes, from many different perspectives, but often with the same deep rich browns of the rocks framed against an intensely blue sea. The large scale of this canvas gives weight to the scene. As the viewer, we are standing on the rocky shore, looking across the rocks to the horizon beyond. The touches of bright blue paint bring a lightness to an otherwise solid scene.
