Recognized as one of the leading California Impressionists, Ritschel has created here a sun-dappled landscape sculpted by the unrelenting coastal winds. In the background the hills and the sky intersect with blurred boundaries subtly popping the trees, with their dark presence, forward. The bent and steadfast cypress trees of the Central Coast were to inspire countless paintings, many of which are in the MMA Collection (see Mary DeNeale Morgan, Francis McComas, Edward Holslag, Armin Hansen, Lockwood DeForest, Louis Siegriest).
